Grocery: In January, Giant announced a $114 million Pennsylvania expansion push that will include three new stores (Harrisburg, Pocono Springs, and South Philadelphia), a Philadelphia distribution center, and 35 store remodels in 2020 and 2021. Lidl opened its second South Jersey location in Cherry Hill in February. Golden Farms, a new grocery operator, opened in the former ShopRite box in Overbrook, while Fresh Grocer closed in March following a four-year legal fight against its landlord, the University of Pennsylvania.
Food & Beverage: Houston-based Steak 48 will open a 12,000 sq. ft. Rittenhouse Square steakhouse in April. At 1616 Chestnut St, vegetable-forward fast casual Dig opened its first restaurant outside of NYC and Boston.
Convenience: Wawa continued its urban expansion, debuting its smallest store to date at 16th and Ranstead—its first with a pickup window.
Store Closures: Sears will close its Concord Mall and Moorestown Mall stores in April. Other chains closing stores include Modell’s, Pier 1, and Bed Bath & Beyond.
